The laboratory in Nichols 24 houses a number of robots, support workstations, and laptops. This lab is heavily used by the Software Engineering Project courses for presentations and other projects.

The Computing and Information Sciences department has four public computing labs, the robotics lab, a lab for Ph.D. students, and multiple research groups with labs, and a server laboratory. All of these facilities are housed in Nichols Hall. In addition to these facilities, Computing and Network Services (CNS) also has a public computing lab.

Lab # of Machines Operating Systems Description
DUE1114 53 Windows/Linux/Mac This classroom lab contains 52 Dell Wyse D50D thin clients, plus one for an instructor in the podium. The CS department uses this lab for several of our courses including CIS 101, 102, and 103. These machines present 4 login choices:
  1. CS Windows: Windows Remote Desktop Server using a CS Login and Password
  2. eID Windows: Windows Remote Desktop Server using an eID and password
  3. CS Linux: cslinux shell server using a CS Login and password
  4. CS Mac OS X: Mac OS X remote access host using a CS Login and Password
DUE1116 25 Windows 10 This classroom lab has machines which have been customized for graphics and gaming courses. There are 24 workstations, plus an instructor PC in the podium. They have Intel Core i7-5820K (3.3GHz) CPUs and 16 GB RAM.
DUE1117 31 Windows 10 This lab serves dual-purposes as both classroom and CDC research area. There are 30 workstations, plus an instructor PC in the podium. They have Intel Core i7-7567U (3.5GHz) CPUs and 16 GB RAM.
DUE1118 8 Windows 10 This a general-purpose Windows lab and our Student Center. There are 8 workstations with Intel Core i7-5557U (3.1GHz) CPUs and 16 GB RAM.
DUE1119 4 Windows 10 GTA Room with 4 general purpose computers.

Rooms DUE1114, 1116, and 1117 have enhanced audio/visual capabilities for teaching and recording lectures. Please see our related documentation for information on how to use them.

Data Center

The CIS Data Center houses a large number of administrative servers, student and faculty servers, and BeoCat, our high performance computing cluster.

coronado file server Linux No No NFS, DRDB The department fileserver. THis can be access at files.cis.ksu.edu
conquest mail smtp imap pop Linux No No SMTP IMAP POP This is the department's internal mail server. This serves mail only for internal routing and long-term archival.
cougar cislinux Linux Yes yes ssh Public-access shell server, available to all CIS users
crossfire Linux Yes Yes [3] VMware The purpose of this server is to provide VMware services required by some classes, such as Cybersecurity for testing and other experimentation.
desoto mirror Linux No No Local Ubuntu mirror host. Updated every 4 hrs.
durango Linux No No Ganeti VM Cluster This server provides Ganeti services for systems use. Several servers used by the department are hosted here as virtual machines.
falcon cups Linux No No CUPS This is the Linux print server. All Linux computers send print jobs to this system.
firebird dhcp Linux No No DHCP Department DHCP server. Any machine that plugs into the physical network will get assigned an address from this server.
grant.w2k Windows 2003 No No DeepFreeze This server is used for the management of the DeepFreeze security software that is used by Windows lab workstations.
hawk phpmyadmin Linux No No PHPMyAdmin Web interface for CIS users to interact with their MySQL databases.
javelin dns-2 Linux No No DNS Secondary DNS server for the department.
journey mysql Linux No No MySQL This machine is the MySQL server allowing TCP connections from any host on the K-State network
kennedy.w2k connect Windows 2003 No No Adobe Connect Pro Used for remote collaboration, including meetings, classes, etc.
lincoln.w2k Windows 2003 No No Active Directory This is the department's secondary authentication server. It provides failover auth services to both Windows and Linux workstations
polara people Linux No No Apache This is the webserver for individuals (students, faculty, and staff) and research groups such as Santos, MACR, KDD, ACM, and various projects.
solstice dns-1 Linux No No DNS This server provides primary DNS for the department.

torino PXE Linux No No PXE This is the departmetn PXE server to install images over the network
vanburen.w2k Windows 2003 No No WTS This is the Window Terminal Server used by the thin clients in the N16 classroom lab.

washington.w2k Windows 2003 No No Active Directory This is the department's primary authentication server. It provides auth services to both Windows and Linux workstations
wildfire www Linux No No Apache Primary webserver for the department.
[1] F/S: General faculty and staff are permitted to access this machine directly. If neither faculty/staff nor students are permitted, the machine is only accessible by the systems staff.
[2] St: Students are permitted to access this machine directly.
[3] Only students currently enrolled in a course or active on a project requiring access to VMware will be granted access to this server.
